Born in London in 1959, early musical influences were coloured by the tastes of his six older siblings and included the music at the tail end of the sixties, including the Beatles, The Doors, Bob Dylan, Donovan, Cat Stevens, Simon And Garfunkel, Leonard Cohen, George Harrison and John Lennon. Aged about 15, Stephen started writing his own songs. Moving to Edinburgh, and The College Of Art in 1977 he was a founder member of the Post-Punk band called Metropak.
